The Scottish Rite Foundation hosts fundraising events year-round to help raise money for the children and families served by the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center and its RiteCare Clinic.

Our Story
Hear from the clinicians, children and families we serve at the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center's RiteCare Clinic.
When Zane Stewart was five years old, he was diagnosed with severe hearing loss in each ear, which denied him the ability to be understood by his family. Now at 15 years old, Zane has made incredible progress working with speech therapists at the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center. His mother, Alissa Stewart, said Zane has come a long way since she adopted him from China 10 years ago. “When we brought Zane home, I knew there was a bigger problem than just a language barrier,” Stewart, executive director of Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area, Inc., said. “Once we found out about the hearing loss, I immediately sought help. I know we wouldn’t be where we are today without the Speech and Hearing Center."
“When we first discovered the issue, he wasn’t able to communicate or express his thoughts or feelings. Once we began therapy, things began to progressively improve – first he was able to imitate animal sounds, then his ABCs and now he can count and talk in full sentences. He has come so far in such a short amount of time. I have learned so much just by observing the clinicians and the students who work with him at the Speech and Hearing Center. I would recommend their services to any parent looking for help. I really don’t know where we would be today without Marshall and the support of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry Foundation."
Communication and behavioral feeding disorders not only affect the child, but also the family. When a mother tells you she has to schedule their family vacation travel plans around specific restaurant locations because her child ONLY eats one type of chicken nugget you realize how a behavioral feeding disorder affects an entire family. As a direct results of funding made available by the generous support of the Scottish Rite Masons our clinic provides behavioral feeding and speech therapy services to families with these very same frustrations every day who may otherwise go without services. It is so rewarding to provide therapy services to families regardless of race, creed, or the family’s inability to pay."
